Indy, a black purebred Tennessee Walker, was born during the fireworks of July 4th. I (co-founder Kelly) named her Independence Magic, Indy for short. Indy was born to a pregnant mare that I had purchased and brought up from Tennessee. When Indy was two months old her mother died of complications from colic. I bottle fed Indy and as we bonded, she became a 900 pound lap horse.
When Indy was a year and a half, I ended up getting a divorce. I could no longer afford to keep her. My heart was broken - but I had no other choice except to sell her. At least I was able to sell her to my very dear friend Melinda.
This is why I don't judge people when they need to rehome an animal due to extenuating life circumstances. I get it. I can't tell you how hard I cried or how many sleepless nights I had over this little mare. I never forgot her over the years. I always wondered where she ended up and if she was happy. I knew if I ever got the chance to get her back I would.
Melinda later decided to sell her and Indy was then bought and sold multiple times. In 2020, I saw an ad online for a horse that matched Indy’s description. After doing some digging and with help from Melinda, we found out Indy was still in Washington. The current owner had been reported to animal control for not providing shelter and keeping Indy in mud up to her knees.
Through some tense negotiation (several times Indy’s current owner changed his mind about selling), Indy was sold back to Melinda for an exorbitant sum.
She immediately gifted her to BDFS to live out the rest of her years here. I am so grateful to Melinda and the others that helped bring my little mare back. Indy is home now with me forever.
Whether it's a one-time donation or monthly, Indy would be very grateful for your kindness and generosity.
