Sasha is a Quarab (Arabian/American Quarter horse cross) that came to Blackdawg Farm Sanctuary (BDFS) with her best friend Sweet. Sasha lived most of her life on a cow farm in Rainier, Washington. Sasha was joined a few years after she was brought to the farm by Sweet, a retired racehorse the owner had claimed at her last race.
Sasha and Sweet lived at the cow farm for over ten years before the owner moved to assisted living. During those years, Sasha and Sweet were not well cared for and did not get vet or much needed hoof care.
With the owner gone, his family abandoned both horses on the property for over a year. The rancher who now leased the land to raise his cattle kindly gave them enough food and water to survive. With no one living on the property, the horses lived out in the field with the cows. Isolated and without needed care or shelter - they just had each other.
Finally, the owner’s family reached out to find the horses a home and Sasha and Sweet were brought to BDFS.
Sasha had foundered, an incredibly painful and sometimes deadly condition where the coffin bone slowly migrates through the bottom of the hoof sole. By the time she came to BDFS, Sasha was in constant, horrible pain and lame.
Sasha has had constant hoof care since arriving at the BDFS, and the founder is now managed. As the oldest of the female horses at BDFS, Sasha has earned her right to live out her dotage in peace and comfort. If that includes a good brushing - she is happy. She has even become part of a trio we call the “Bay Club” with Trooper, who keeps a watchful eye on his “girls”.
After years of neglect and then abandonment, Sasha and Sweet will be together for the rest of their lives at BDFS.
Whether its a one-time donation or monthly, Sasha would be most appreciative of your kindness and generosity.
